The method that Rondo used was to put his body into a state of apparent death through the consumption of the poison. He wasn’t sure how well it would work, but at the very least it would immobilise his movements and helped him to deceive his older brother and guards into thinking he was dead.
But when Felix sliced up his whole body, he felt very nervous. If he was left like that for too long he would have died from blood loss. But thanks to his older brother’s concern about dirtying the estate, Rondo was somehow able to get by due to the effects of the healing magic. He was then able to recover some of his strength while being carried inside the sack and regained a minimal level of movement in his body.
Regardless, he was able to safely escape from the grounds with his life. Now he has to think about what he will do from now on. In order to grasp his fate in his own hands, he will need to fully understand the power he holds inside. The poison magic he wields is just as good as the powerful magic his father and brother have. This type of magic doesn’t care whether the opponent is weak or strong and will take effect regardless [1]It’s essentially saying that it’s like a debuff type magic which doesn’t factor in things like elemental resistance. In other words, even someone like Rondo who has no experience in fighting would be able to defeat a top mage like his father by afflicting him with poison.
In addition, Rondo’s repertoire of available poison magic was limited only to those poisons which he had personally consumed. In other words, Rondo’s strength could increase without restriction as long as he kept drinking new poisons. Thinking about the future, it seems that there is a need to drink as many poisons as possible to increase the number of tools in his belt [2]The original expression for this was ‘balls in his glove’, a baseball reference to pitches. I changed it to something a bit more context appropriate
However, it wasn’t like it would be good to just go around recklessly drinking whatever poison was lying around. Rondo’s body is unable to neutralise the poison within his body instantly and instead remains active until he hears what he calls the Voice of Heaven’s announcement echoing inside his head [3]He has to endure the effects of any poison until the system can finish absorbing its powers. In all likelihood, the way his magic probably works is that it analyses and copies the power of the poison during the detoxification process of his body. As he doesn’t know what would happen if he imbibed a fatal poison which could instantly kill him or paralyse his head and nervous system, it would be better not to go overboard.
Although his talent in poison magic is high enough to manifest a magic crest, this kind of unorthodox magic doesn’t have much versatility in its usage. As a result, for now what he should do is increase the range of usable poisons in his arsenal and quickly increase his combat capabilities while searching for a place where the Margrave’s people won’t be able to find him.
“I see you are wishing to register as an adventurer. Do you have the registration fee of 1 silver coin to pay for this?”
“Yes” [4]Random conversation in the middle of poison explanations. It’s likely a nod to when anime has a scene change but the narrator keeps talking about the previous topic
The strength of a poison can vary wildly depending on its origin and make. For example, within the category of paralysis type poisons there is a large gap in effectiveness between the Aspiri herb which gives a mild tingling sensation to the tongue and the venom of a king snake which can even paralyse wyverns. What Rondo was ultimately aiming to get was a powerful poison which can decide the outcome of a battle. As this type of poison was likely to originate from a wild monster, Rondo thought it was a matter of course that he applied to become an adventurer.
To that end, he arrived at the Anastasia Duchy located in the southern kingdom. As the house of Margrave Édouard was protecting the northern border, it was as far as you could from their lands and influence. For now, what he needs to do is to stay in this faraway land for a while to build up his strength.
“Very well, I will now process your nameplate…Mr Rondo, is that name correct?”
“Yes, that’s right”
In this world there is no need for something like a pseudonym. This is because gods exist, and when your name is presented at the temple it is bound to your soul. The special nameplate given by the temple is made using an ancient technique and is impossible to falsify. Rondo is thus forced to use his real name when using his nameplate.
It should be noted that only his first name has to be given, so Rondo has a certain level of assurance that his connection to his noble family will not be leaked. While Rondo wants to acquire a powerful poison, he has some concerns that because he isn’t a renown adventurer he would garner suspicions and be put into an awkward spot if he directly went after it. Where possible he would prefer to stay low-key and slowly accumulate poisons during his regular activities.
“So what job would you like to register as?”
“Umm.. a Ranger. One of my specialities is the usage of poisons”
“Oh, that’s quite rare”
It is important to highlight your skills or techniques so people know what role you can fulfil. The client can also know a little bit more about the person who is receiving their job notice and it would also make it easier for the guild to pass on assignments that are appropriate for your specialty. As it wasn’t really possible for Rondo to claim he was a poison magician, he decided to introduce himself as a scout who can use poison.
“If that’s the case, then now might be a good time to make some money”
“Eh, is that so?”
“Indeed, the price of all sorts of poisons and antidotes has increased across the board. Furthermore, if it is an antidote that isn’t frequently seen around this Duchy, then you can probably get a very high price for it”
I was curious as to why the situation was as they described, but the receptionist just gave me a bitter smile. It looks like they didn’t want to give any specific answers. Maybe there were some unspeakable circumstances surrounding this issue. For the time being, I will follow the advice given and start looking for requests related to the collection of poisonous herbs. I will start by acquiring some poison herbs so that I can gradually develop my abilities.
“By damn, there really are all kinds of Dukes around. While I had heard you could make some good money by submitting poison, I was surprised how easy it was”
As I was leaving the guild I happened to pass by an adventurer who was walking in at the same time. It seems that similar to me, this adventurer had also looked for a request related to poison. Perhaps the circumstances that the receptionist was hesitant to talk about are related to the Duke? If true, that would explain why it would be a complicated subject that most people wouldn’t want to discuss. But if we are talking about poisons, with my abilities there is probably no one in the entire world who is more useful than me.
“Excuse me, there is something I would like to ask you”
Saying that, I called out to the beaming face of the leader of the group. As I passed him a silver coin from my sleeve, he happily divulged everything I needed to know.
“It seems like the young lady of the Duke has collapsed from poison. At this rate she won’t last much longer…His excellency the Duke has no doubt panicked and is doing everything he can to try and save her. It’s gotten to the point where he is even appealing to random adventurers, so the situation must be pretty serious.”
