“You’re making a fuss.”
When the Old lady who had been sitting quietly grimaced and spoke, Jung-yeon immediately closed her mouth as if she had been caught in the act. And finally, Jung-hoo, who hadn’t returned to his ancestral home until late, appeared. He bowed his head to the old lady and his brothers with a rough face and sat down at the end of the sofa.
“Do you have a woman?”
“Jung-yeon.”
When Jung-yeon asked Jung-hoo first, Jung-soo sternly called his younger sister’s name. After seeing Jung-yeon turn her head with her lips pursed, Jung-hoo answered.
“I have a woman.”
“Hahaha.”
The Old lady put down the pestle she had been wiping on the table and laughed heartily. Everyone tensed up when 70-year-old Mrs. Jang Yoon-hee laughed like that.
“How did it go?”
The voice that always scolded her eldest son and second son, who inherited the company, was as gentle as a mother’s when facing Jung-hoo. The woman, who still looked like she was in her 50s, extended her hand to Jung-hoo. After sitting at the end of the sofa and seeing his mother’s outstretched hand, Jung-hoo approached and kneeled in front of her.
“I can’t let her go.”
“Are you going to get married?”
Jung-hoo met the Old lady’s gaze without answering. She leaned her chin on the armrest and tightly held her son’s hand.
“Can I assume that your feelings remain the same?”
“Yes.”
At his answer, the Old lady smiled broadly. His answer was refreshing. Jung-hoo was of an appropriate age, and the Old lady’s health had not been the same as before, the topic of marriage had come up countless times recently. He was still young, but considering his older siblings who had already settled down at his age, it was an appropriate time. When his elder sister-in-law first cautiously brought up the topic of marriage in the presence of the old woman, and said she had someone on her mind, Jung-hoo had only watched how the situation unfolded.
Then Jung-hoo mentioned that he wanted to ask for the Old lady’s permission and talked about someone he wanted to find. As he grew older, he felt uneasy when he kept remembering someone even when he met others. He said she was too intense to be called his first love since it was during high school. According to Jung-hoo, she was a troublesome girl who took his money and disappeared.
As she listened to the story slowly, she felt a rare sense of joy. He was the son who had never talked to his mother about a woman before. She paid careful attention to his first story. Upon hearing that the girl eventually dropped out of school and started working at a bar, the Old lady gave up first…
“Wouldn’t it be clear if you confirmed about her with your own eyes? To cut off those feelings, you have to see her with your own eyes,” the Old lady said.
Jung-hoo made up his mind to find Jae-hee because of his mother’s words. He had heard about her working at a bar, but he hadn’t seen her with his own eyes. He thought that if he saw the worn-out Jae-hee in person, she would no longer come to mind.
“She was quite clever. She left after firmly planting herself in his memory so that Jung-hoo wouldn’t forget her.” the Old lady thought.
The more she thought about it, the mischievous the girl seemed. She felt that she could understand his feelings at that time, but she didn’t need to tell Jung-hoo about it. Some truths had to be realized on one’s own.
“Are you sure, but what about the other girl?”
Jung-hoo was already protecting a girl she hadn’t even seen with his whole being.
Even his family members were annoyed when he wouldn’t show her or hold her in his arms, causing his older brother, Jung-soo, to click his tongue.
“Leave him be.”
Just as Jung-soo was about to say something, the Old lady blocked him.
“I’ll go now.”
There was a separate business that would be passed on to Jung-hoo. Despite refusing it and choosing to become a corporate lawyer, the Old lady didn’t say a word. Jung-hoo had always seen his older brothers constantly traveling abroad for business, leaving his sisters-in-law alone at home.
“He would be the most family-oriented among all of you.”
Seeing Jung-hoo confidently leaving the house without any regrets, the Old lady made a comment.
*****
When Jung-hoo arrived at the villa, it was already past midnight. As he opened the door and stepped inside, the air was still warm, but an indescribable emptiness filled the space.
“…Sunbae.”
Standing still in front of the entrance, he called out to Jae-hee, facing inside. There was no response. He noticed that the shopping bags he had stacked neatly on one side. He hadn’t called for help while being with Jae-hee. He looked at the sheets spread out on the front veranda and entered inside. It was a quiet and tranquil silence where not even a sound of breathing could be heard.
“Min Jae-hee.”
